All 32 London boroughs and the City of London
We take enquiries from across Greater London. Every borough below has its own page describing its distinctive housing – from Georgian squares and Victorian terraces to garden suburbs, interwar Metro-land and post-war estates – and the local controls that most often affect retrofit.
Local facts on these pages are drawn from council conservation area appraisals, Historic England listings and published local histories. Planning controls change, so always confirm the current position with your council.
Before you enquire
- Check whether your property is listed or in a conservation area – your council’s website will usually show this.
- For flats, find out who owns the freehold and manages the building.
- Gather any EPC, drawings or previous surveys.

London housing at a glance
How housing types vary across London
Inner London
Inner boroughs have high proportions of pre-1919 housing: Georgian and Victorian terraces, stucco-fronted houses, mansion blocks and many houses converted into flats. Conservation areas and listed buildings are common, and much of the housing is leasehold.
Outer London
Outer boroughs include large areas of interwar semi-detached and terraced housing, planned council estates of the 1920s and 1930s, post-war housing and newer developments. Cavity walls, hipped roofs and bay windows are common, alongside older village centres.
